President’s Message
Dear Members and Friends,
On Saturday, February 11, HJCI welcomed in the Year of Rabbit with approximate 100 guest, friends and members. We enjoyed a delicious bento, entertainment and raffle. We enjoyed a judo demonstration by members of the Youth Class, a recorder perforance by the Fuefuki Trio, and ondo dance with audience participation. I wish to thank you for your generous New Year donations and donation of raffle prizes by our groups and members.
On Saturday, March 11, the Little Tokyo Historical Society held a book info (Rebel's Outcry, film documentary ("Little Tokyo Reporter") and panel discussion about the life and contributions of an early civil rights attorney and community activist, Sei Fuji. HJCI hosted this very interesting and educational event. Mr. Fuji and his law partner, J. Marion Wright, overturned the Alien Land Act which prevented immigrants from owning land in California.
I look forward to seeing you at our Spring Pancake Breakfast fundraiser to be held on Sunday, April 30, 8-11am. This will be a eat-in or takeout event and an opportunity to gather with family and friends while supporting the HJCI's operating expenses. Look for the preorder form in the mail and email.
HJCI recently completed one of our 75th Anniversary goals of fumigating all 3 of our buildings. Thanks to your generous donations and support this major maintenance need was finally completed! I will keep you updated as we complete additional projects.
Special thanks to Hiro (Casey) Ogino and Bruce Ibusuki for building the structural framework for installing a full size movie screen that was used at the recent film screening. Instead of renting the screen, HJCI plans to purchase a permanent screen for future events.
Please feel free to share your comments, ideas and questions email or the contact section of the hollywooojci.com website.
Stay healthy, keep well and I hope to see you all soon!
Asao Masumiya, HJCI President
